When it comes to skincare, a lot of the techniques we grew up using have come to be outdated, ineffective, and more damaging to our skin if anything. The beauty industry is constantly changing; from product ingredients to facial techniques, giving us new options to effectively take care of our skin. Today we’re tackling the 4 most common skincare mistakes to help you get on track and up-to-date towards flawless skin.

Makeup Wipes

If there’s one thing you need to eliminate from your skincare routine, it’s definitely makeup wipes. Makeup wipes are convenient, but an extremely damaging way to remove your makeup. They do not effectively remove the debris from your skin, instead, makeup wipes just smear your makeup around while stripping your skin of its natural oils until you cleanse with an actual facial cleanser - continuously tugging your skin will eventually cause irritation and inflammation that can lead to hyperpigmentation as well. Also, many makeup wipes contain alcohol, which can dry out your skin. Even if the wipes are alcohol-free, they’ll most likely contain preservatives in them to avoid the growth of bacteria and mold - you don’t want to put those chemicals on your face. Don't be lazy - ditch the makeup wipes and invest in a better cleanser.

Ingredient Knowledge

I’ve seen countless videos online of women sharing their skincare routines using products that combat the same skin concerns. For example, a toner with an AHA and serums with AHA are all working to do the same thing. Do your do-diligence by researching the ingredients listed on the packages to avoid wasting money or combining products that aren't meant to live together. Do not be the grab and go type, know what you are buying.

Sunscreen

You can skip your serums and under-eye creams, but if there’s one thing that isn't optional its SPF. No matter your skin tone or level of melanin, the skin always needs that extra layer of protection against UV rays, and not just in the summer but all year-round. Not only does SPF protect you from UV Rays but it also helps to prevent cancer, aging, and discoloration.

Product Application

It’s best practice to layer your products from lightest to heaviest to ensuring each product has the opportunity to absorb deep into the skin. In the morning you should always start off with a clean face, followed with your toner, serum, eye cream, spot treatment, moisturizer then finish with your sunscreen. At night you'll need to start with a double cleanse, followed by toner, eye cream, treatments, and finished off with a rich night cream.
